Electric Car Charging Times

2022 red BMW iX

Drivers can expect a few different options when charging their vehicles around town or at home. There are different plugs and ports, but much of it is universal, and adapters provide additional freedom. The answer to the question, “how long does it take to charge an electric vehicle?”, there will be some variation nonetheless. It depends on the make and model of EV you are driving, but also which of the three EV charging types you are utilizing.

The size of an EV battery pack will affect how long it takes to charge. Basically, there is a ton of variability and there isn’t a direct answer to be given. However, our team covers the various types of charging domestic charging, rapid domestic charging, and public charging — and how your choice of each will ultimately determine your electric vehicle charging time.

Electric Car Charging Time: Types of Chargers

  1. Domestic Outlet Home Charging (Regular Outlet): This is a typical (three-prong) 110V/120V charging outlet (Level 1 Charging) It usually takes around 24 hours or more for a full charge. You can expect it to take days to reach a full charge with this method.
  2. Installed Brand-Approved Domestic Charging: Level 2 Charging is a professionally installed, typically brand-specific charge. Level 2 charging is much faster at 240V+. DC fast chargers (as opposed to AC ones) are also common. Some vehicles can obtain 80% charge in a half an hour to forty minutes with this charging method. Diminishing speeds of charge occur after 80%, so that last 20% will take a bit longer.
  3. Public Charging: It’s becoming increasingly popular in Vancouver, WA and beyond to find public charging stations at shops, hotels, restaurants, etc. These charging stations vary in type and speed, frequently providing Level 2 charging speeds for greater convenience, but some are Level 3. You can even find emissions-free renewable energy charging with solar panels or wind turbines!
